Red Dead Redemption 2’s age rating is ESRB M (Mature 17+) in the US and Canada, PEGI 18 across most of Europe, and USK 18 in Germany. Steam’s own regional ratings field additionally shows MA15+ in Australia and R16 in New Zealand. All of these were checked directly against the ESRB, PEGI, USK, and Steam listings on 7 September 2026 — sources are linked throughout.

RDR2 age ratings by board

Board / region Rating Descriptors Official page
ESRB — PS4 / Xbox One (US, Canada) M (Mature 17+) Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Drugs and Alcohol esrb.org
ESRB — PC (US, Canada) M (Mature 17+) Same descriptors as above esrb.org
PEGI (Europe) 18 Violence, Bad Language, Gambling, In-game Purchases pegi.info
USK (Germany) 18 “keine Jugendfreigabe gemäß §14 JuSchG” (no release to minors) usk.de
Australia MA15+ Online Interactivity, Strong Themes, Violence ACB site not reachable at check time — Steam-sourced, see note below
New Zealand (NZOFLC) R16 Cruelty, Offensive Language, Violence not checked — no official NZOFLC URL confirmed

The Australia and New Zealand descriptors come from Steam’s regional-ratings data, not from a board’s own site, because the Australian Classification Board’s website couldn’t be reached during this review and no working NZOFLC listing URL was confirmed. Treat those two rows as Steam-sourced rather than board-sourced.

Steam’s data also lists several other regional boards for the same release, all at the adult end of their own scales: Korea’s KGRB (18), Brazil’s DEJUS (18), South Africa’s FPB (18), Taiwan’s CRL (18), and Chile’s CSRR (R). These aren’t covered in detail here because, unlike ESRB, PEGI, and USK, Steam doesn’t show a linkable official page for them — only the rating symbol itself (source: Steam appdetails API).

What M and 18 mean

ESRB M (Mature 17+) is ESRB’s own rating category, shown as “Mature 17+” directly on the game’s ESRB listing page — it’s the second-highest of ESRB’s ratings, one step below Adults Only.

PEGI 18 and USK 18 both use a plain age number rather than a letter. USK’s listing for Red Dead Redemption 2 states the rating in one specific German legal phrase: “keine Jugendfreigabe gemäß §14 JuSchG” — no release to anyone under 18, under Germany’s youth-protection law. The USK entry is filed under title number 45672/18, reviewed 2018-09-05 for the PlayStation 4 version.

ESRB descriptors explained

ESRB’s listing pins the M rating to six specific content descriptors. Each one covers a single category of content — none of them are editorial additions, they’re pulled directly from ESRB’s own page:

  • Blood and Gore — depictions of blood and mutilated body parts.
  • Intense Violence — graphic and realistic-looking acts of violence.
  • Nudity — graphic or prolonged depictions of nudity.
  • Sexual Content — non-explicit depictions of sexual behavior, possibly including nudity.
  • Strong Language — explicit and/or frequent use of profanity.
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol — the game depicts characters using illegal drugs or alcohol.

ESRB’s page also flags two Interactive Elements separately from the content descriptors: In-Game Purchases and Users Interact. These describe game mechanics (spending real money in-game, and unfiltered player-to-player interaction) rather than depicted content, which is why ESRB lists them in their own field.

Why Australia and New Zealand show lower-sounding ratings

Australia’s MA15+ and New Zealand’s R16 aren’t lighter versions of the same rating as ESRB’s M or PEGI’s 18 — they use the category scales of entirely separate national boards, each running its own scale and its own review criteria. Australia’s classification board and New Zealand’s OFLC aren’t part of ESRB, PEGI, or USK, so their category labels (“MA15+”, “R16”) simply don’t map one-to-one onto ESRB’s or PEGI’s categories. Steam’s data shows Australia’s descriptors as Online Interactivity, Strong Themes, and Violence, and New Zealand’s as Cruelty, Offensive Language, and Violence — a different descriptor vocabulary than ESRB’s, which is expected given they’re different boards, not evidence that either region judged the game to be less mature.

Red Dead Online and in-game purchases

The ratings above cover the full game as released, not story mode and Red Dead Online separately — none of the sources checked break the descriptors down by mode. What the official listings do say: ESRB’s Interactive Elements field lists Users Interact (unmoderated communication with other players) and In-Game Purchases, and PEGI’s own descriptor set for the title includes In-game Purchases alongside Violence, Bad Language, and Gambling. Both of those line up with Red Dead Online’s real-money and multiplayer-interaction features, but the source pages themselves don’t state that explicitly — this is the reader connecting the descriptor to the known game mode, not a claim made by ESRB or PEGI.

What parents should know

Every point here is a descriptor pulled from an official board listing, not a personal recommendation:

  • ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Nudity, Sexual Content, Strong Language, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol, plus In-Game Purchases and Users Interact.
  • PEGI rates it 18 for Violence, Bad Language, Gambling, and In-game Purchases.
  • USK rates it 18, with no legal release to anyone under 18 in Germany.
  • Steam’s regional data separately shows MA15+ in Australia and R16 in New Zealand, using those countries’ own rating scales; neither board’s own site was checked for this article.

This article doesn’t add a verdict on top of those descriptors — the boards’ own category and descriptor labels are the full extent of what’s confirmed here.

How to check the rating yourself

  • ESRB: the official listing pages for PS4/Xbox One and PC show the rating, descriptors, and interactive elements.
  • PEGI: search “Red Dead Redemption 2” on pegi.info to see both the Xbox One/PS4 entry (released 2018-10-26) and the PC/Stadia entry (PC released 2019-11-05).
  • USK: the game’s usk.de listing (title 45672) shows the German rating and review date.
  • Steam: the store page displays the required age plus badges for ESRB, PEGI, USK, and other regional boards before you can view it.

If you’re also weighing which version to buy, see Red Dead Redemption 2 editions and platforms; the age rating is the same across all of them. And if you’re curious how the game is received once you’re past the age question, there’s a separate look at Red Dead Redemption 2’s Steam player rating — a different metric with no connection to age classification.
