As of 29 September 2026, the current Minecraft version is Java Edition 26.3 (released 15 September 2026) and Bedrock Edition 26.52 (a hotfix posted 25 September 2026). Both editions got the same Wilderness Bound update on 15 September 2026 — on Java it’s version 26.3, on Bedrock it’s 26.50, followed there by the 26.51 and 26.52 hotfixes. The newest test builds beyond those are Java’s 26.4 Snapshot 2 (29 September 2026) and Bedrock’s 26.60.28 preview/beta (22 September 2026). This page was checked against Mojang’s official version manifest and the changelogs on feedback.minecraft.net on 29 September 2026; if a newer version has shipped since, the in-game version number and the sources below will show it.

Edition Stable as of 29 Sep 2026 Released Latest test build Released
Java Edition 26.3 15 September 2026 26.4 Snapshot 2 29 September 2026
Bedrock Edition 26.52 (hotfix) 25 September 2026 26.60.28 (Beta/Preview) 22 September 2026

Per its changelog, the 26.52 hotfix becomes available on each platform as it’s approved, so a device that hasn’t received it yet can still be on an earlier 26.5x build.

How to check your own Minecraft version

The most reliable check is inside the game itself, since it always reflects what’s actually installed rather than what’s newest overall:

  • Java Edition: the version number is shown on the game’s main menu, and the launcher shows which version profile is currently selected before you press Play.
  • Bedrock Edition: the version number is shown on the main menu.

If in doubt, that on-screen number is always more accurate for your own game than any article — including this one — since new versions ship on their own schedule. It’s also worth checking before you follow any guide, mod or server instructions online: features described for 26.3 may not exist yet on an older install, and features from a snapshot or preview build may not exist yet on the stable version.

How many Minecraft versions exist in total

Mojang’s official version manifest — a public JSON file on Mojang’s servers that lists Java Edition versions with their type and date — held 917 entries when we checked it on 29 September 2026, going all the way back to early development builds. Of those, 103 are full stable releases; the rest are snapshots, pre-releases, release candidates, April Fools builds and old alpha and beta builds. The oldest entry that counts as a proper release is version 1.0, from 17 November 2011 — everything from there to 26.3 sits inside that same manifest file. We found no equivalent public version manifest for Bedrock Edition, so its historical version count isn’t tracked the same way; its changelogs on feedback.minecraft.net are the closest official record.

What the new version numbering means

Mojang changed how it numbers Minecraft versions in 2025–2026. According to Mojang’s announcement and the Minecraft Wiki’s summary of it, full Java releases now use a year.drop.hotfix format — 26.3 means the third drop of the 2026 cycle — replacing the old 1.21.x style. Java’s regular snapshots switched to “26.x Snapshot N” naming (for example “26.1 Snapshot 1”) starting 16 December 2025, replacing the previous year-week naming format (the 1 April 2026 April Fools build, 26w14a, still used the old style).

Bedrock Edition also moved to year-based numbers, but per Mojang’s announcement its hotfixes count upward from the release number itself (for example 26.50 → 26.51 → 26.52) instead of adding a separate third number as Java does. Its last old-style content update was 1.21.130 (9 December 2025); the last old-style builds were the 1.21.131 (16 December 2025) and 1.21.132 (8 January 2026) hotfixes, and the first release under the new scheme was 26.0 on 10 February 2026. Bedrock’s stable build as of 29 September 2026, 26.52, and its latest preview, 26.60.28, both use this scheme.

Java Edition vs Bedrock Edition

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are developed and released on separate schedules — Java for PC, and Bedrock across Windows, consoles and mobile. Both editions use the year as a version prefix, so in 2026 both version numbers start with 26, but a “26.x” Java version and a “26.x” Bedrock version are not the same build.

Why version numbers differ between editions

Even with the shared year prefix, Java and Bedrock don’t carry the same version number for the same update. The Wilderness Bound update is the clearest example: it came out on both editions on 15 September 2026, but it’s 26.3 on Java and 26.50 on Bedrock. Mojang says the numbers after the year prefix differ because of platform limitations and Bedrock’s more frequent releases, so as of 29 September 2026 Java’s stable release (26.3) and Bedrock’s (26.52) carry different numbers.

When is the next Minecraft version expected?

No release date was announced in the sources we checked on 29 September 2026. Java Edition’s next version, 26.4, has only just entered testing — its second snapshot, 26.4 Snapshot 2, came out on 29 September 2026 — and Bedrock’s newest builds, numbered 26.60.x, are still in preview/beta (26.60.28, 22 September 2026). The 26.3 cycle, for comparison, went through ten numbered snapshots, three pre-releases and three release candidates in the manifest before the full release. The safest way to know the moment a new version ships, rather than guessing from a test build, is to check the manifest or changelog links in the sources below, or the in-game version number described above.
